Essential Functions

  • Manage a high-volume taxpayer litigation docket-including client communications, filing, discovery, settlement negotiations (by phone/in-person/mediations/arbitrations), depositions, expert designation/appraisals, court appearances, etc.
  • Advise and counsel clients on various property tax issues.
  • Represent client interests in administrative appeal hearings and in court.
  • Negotiate with opposing counsel and appraisal district representatives.  
  • Assist in daily client service activities, including client meetings, hearings, and mediation.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with clients, opposing counsel, and county appraisal district representatives.
  • Develop and demonstrate a thorough understanding and working knowledge of the client’s business needs, including real estate valuation and property tax issues.
  • Review county appraisal district assessment valuations for accuracy and determine if appeals are warranted.
  • Present property tax appeals at informal meetings with appraisal district representatives and formal appraisal review board hearings.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with appraisal district staff and their legal representation.
  • Attend legal and appraisal conferences and classes.
  • Write articles and speak at conferences.
  • Participate in law firm committees and events

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree and active Texas status required.
  • Minimum 3 years of legal experience.
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel year-round, with active Texas driver’s license.
  • Must be highly motivated, a team-player and a self-starter.
  • Must be willing to learn a specialized area of tax law.
  • Must be willing to develop valuation skills and learn appraisal methodology.

Essential Functions

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROPERTY TAX CONSULTANT

  • Directly assist the Firm’s Attorneys and Principals in daily client service activities including client meetings, hearings and mediation.
  • Apply valuation knowledge to develop property tax appeals as well as property tax research.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding and working knowledge of the client’s business, real estate valuation and property tax issues.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with clients and county appraisal district representatives.
  • Present property tax appeals at Appraisal District meetings and Appraisal Review Board hearings.
  • Actively participate in local professional / industry organizations.

Qualifications

EDUCATION OF THE PROPERTY TAX CONSULTANT

  • Masters / Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 3 -5 years in Ad Valorem Tax Valuation
  • Texas Property Tax Consulting license from TDLR

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PROPERTY TAX CONSULTANT

  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of valuation principles and methodologies
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Team oriented
  • Ability to travel year-round, with heavy travel June through August
